Kisaragi Station | Japanese Horror Stories & Urban Legends

Intro

In 2004, a mysterious thread surfaced on Japan’s largest anonymous message board, 2channel. A user named “Hasumi” live-posted a bizarre experience while riding a local train in Shizuoka Prefecture.*
What began as an ordinary commute quickly descended into a surreal nightmare. This thread is now one of Japan's most famous internet legends—“Kisaragi Station.”

* Shizuoka Prefecture: Located between Tokyo and Nagoya, Shizuoka is known for its calm, laid-back atmosphere. It feels like a quiet regional city. Mentioning a real place gives the story a stronger sense of realism.

Kisaragi Station

98: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:14
It might just be my imagination, but… could I ask something?

99: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:16
Go ahead.

100: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:18

>>98
What’s going on?

101: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:18
I’ve been on a certain private railway for a while now, and something feels off.

104: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:19
Hmm, I’m listening.

107: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:23
It’s the train I always take to work, but it hasn’t stopped at a station for about twenty minutes.
Normally it stops every five—seven or eight at the longest—but not this time.
There are five other passengers besides me, and they’re all asleep.

108: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:23
You didn’t already hop off, did you?

111: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:25
Couldn’t it just be an express vs. local thing?

112: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:25

>>107
Is it a rapid-service train?

114: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:29
You might be right—I may have boarded the wrong one. I’ll wait it out a little longer.
If things still feel off, I’ll come back for advice.

115: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:35
For now, head to the very last car and see if you can find the conductor.

116: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:40
If the driver’s having a seizure or something, that’s bad news. Go check the cab!

118: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:44
The train still shows no sign of stopping, so I’m going to have a look.

120: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/08 23:47
Write the line name and the station where you boarded, first of all.

126: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:00
The windows had blinds pulled down—couldn’t see the conductor or the driver.
The line’s a private railway in Shizuoka Prefecture.

128: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:01

>>126
Put on a handle name and a tripcode so we know it’s you.

131: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:02

>>126
Try knocking on the window?

137: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:08
I tapped the glass, but no reply

146: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:13
Can’t you see anything outside?
Like the name of a station you passed?

153: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:19
After we came out of a tunnel the speed dropped a little. We never go through tunnels on this line.
I boarded at Shin-Hamamatsu.

156: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:23
We’re slowing—looks like a station.

157: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:24
Don’t tell me you’re actually getting off?

160: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:25
The train is stopped at “Kisaragi Station” right now.
Should I get off? I’ve never heard of this place.

161: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:26

>>Hasumi
What time was the train you boarded?

162: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:26
You should totally step out and look around.

165: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:28
Stay on till the end of the line!

166: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:29
Uh, hasn’t it already started moving again by now?

167: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:29
I got off… It’s an unmanned station.
The train I boarded was, I think, the 11:40.

168: Machida Fan Club ◆VbT745avmg 04/01/09 00:30
“Kisaragi Station” doesn’t come up in any search…
Wait—Hasumi’s train ran for a whole hour?
Right, I’m really off to take a bath.

170: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:32
Can’t find “Kisaragi Station” in search results either…

176: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:34
Tried to find a timetable so I could go back, but there isn’t one.
The train was still here, so I thought about getting on again—
but while I was typing this, it left.

181: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:36
Is there any building nearby where people might be?
It’s cold—take care of yourself.

182: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:36
I’ll leave the station and look for a taxi. Thanks for the help.

183: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:36
That’s probably best. Be careful out there.

185: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:39
Kinda doubt you’ll find a taxi around an unmanned station after the last train

186: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:41
And so Hasumi became a resident of the 2-D world… The end.

187: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:41
There’s nothing here at all—no taxis, nothing.
What should I do?

190: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:43

>>187
Find the station staff — or a police box — now!

191: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 00:43
Call 110 for the cops, maybe?

193: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:43
How about phoning a taxi company?

194: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 00:43
Looks like a job for the police, really.

195: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:44
If there’s a phone booth, use the directory to look up a cab and call.

200: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:46
Hasumi-san—there’s no station called Kisaragi.
Could you double-check the name?

202: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:47
Maybe dial 104, ask for the nearest taxi company, and have them send a car.

204: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:48
I called home and asked my parents to pick me up, but they’ve never heard of Kisaragi Station either.
They said they’ll check the map first and then come—but this is starting to scare me.

209: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 00:50
What about the other passengers?
Were you the only one who got off?

213: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:52

>>Hasumi-san
I searched online too—nothing on any “Kisaragi Station.”
You’re sure you’re still somewhere near Shin-Hamamatsu, right?
I’ll try Yahoo as well.

214: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 00:53
I looked for a public phone but there isn’t one.
No one else got off, so I’m alone here.
The station name really does say Kisaragi.

215: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:55
Is the “Kisaragi Station” from that dating-sim unmanned too, I wonder?

217: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:56
Sometimes the public phone’s outside the station grounds.

218: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:56
Are you some kind of game-nerd? Googling “Kisaragi” only brings up a video game.

220: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 00:56
How about just leaving the station for now?

221: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 00:57
Just looked it up—apparently the kanji can be read “kisaragi”…

223: Cell-Phone User 04/01/09 00:59
Write the names of the station before and after Kisaragi. Don’t tell me they aren’t posted.

225: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:00

>>221
Wait, you mean “Oni Station”? Creepy.

229: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 01:01
What game are you talking about? There’s no sign of a previous or next station anywhere.

249: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 01:08
Just walk the tracks back home.

259: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 01:12
Right… I didn’t think of that—I was panicking. I’ll walk along the tracks and wait for my parents to call.
I tried i-mode’s town info, but it just threw a “Point-something Error.”
I want to go home as fast as possible.

255: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 01:10

>>Hasumi
Hurry up and use a phone book or whatever to call a taxi already!

256: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:11
If you start running now, you might catch up to the train!

258: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:11
It’s a station, right? There’s gotta be at least a house or two nearby.

265: Machida Fan Club ◆VbT745avmg 04/01/09 01:14
What’s around you, exactly?
Even if you say “nothing,” is there a mountain, a field, a wide plain, the sea—give us some clue.

280: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 01:18
There truly is nothing nearby. Just fields and a distant mountain.
But if I follow the tracks I should get back eventually, so I’ll try. Thanks, everyone.
Even if you think it’s a prank, can I come back for advice if things get worse?

283: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:18
Sure. Just be careful, okay?

285: Machida Fan Club ◆VbT745avmg (sage) 04/01/09 01:19
Of course. Watch your phone battery—that’s your lifeline now.

286: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:19

>>280
Don’t head the wrong way. And be extra careful in any tunnels.

296: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:22
Are you even getting reception out there?
Maybe it’s safer not to leave the station…

303: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:24
Cold night, empty station, no staff…
The lights might flicker out any minute and you’ll be in total darkness.

304: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:25
The tracks will be even darker, and there’s still that tunnel ahead, right?

305: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:25
Honestly, waiting for dawn at the station might’ve been the safer bet…

308: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:26
Yeah, this is starting to look bad.

317: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 01:30
My dad just called. After a lot of back-and-forth he said, “We can’t figure out where you are—dial 110.”
I’m not thrilled about it, but I’m going to phone the police for help now.

358: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:43
I still think it’d be easier to move once it’s daylight

361: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:45
Could you really sit and wait alone all night?
In some unfamiliar, downright weird place…?

362: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:46

>>361
Then could you walk through a tunnel alone in the middle of the night—
down tracks in a strange land?

363: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:46
So, would you rather keep walking a cold, unfamiliar road all night?

380: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 01:55
I called 110 and tried explaining everything, but they got angry—said it had to be a prank.
I panicked and ended up apologizing…

382: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:56

>>380
Why apologize?
Just give up for tonight and wait for the first train.

386: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 01:57
I can hear drums in the distance, and mixed in, a sound like bells.
Honestly, I have no idea what to do now.

388: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 01:58
What’s the station area like? Anything around at all?

395: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:00
This is where it all starts

396: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:00
Drums and bells…?
(´・ω・`) shanshan pokupoku

391: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 01:58
Either way, get back to the station, Hasumi.
When you’re lost, returning to the first spot is best.

400: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:01
Maybe there’s some festival going on.

401: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 02:01
You’ll think I’m lying, but I’m too terrified to look behind me.
I want to go back to the station, but I just can’t turn around.

406: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:03

>>401
Run. Do NOT look back.

420: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:08
Don’t head for the station anymore—they’ll drag you off.
Just run to the tunnel! It should be closer than you think.

422: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 02:09
Someone behind me yelled, “Hey, it’s dangerous—don’t walk on the tracks!” I thought it was a station worker and turned around.
About ten meters away stood an old man with only one leg… and then he vanished.
I’m so scared I can’t move.

423: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 02:09

>>Hasumi-tan
Take it easy and listen to big bro, okay?
Head toward those drums—you should find whoever’s beating them.

424: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:10

>>420
Where exactly are you trying to send Hasumin?

426: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:11

>>422
I told you—don’t look back. RUN.

428: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:11
How do you know it was an “old man” when you only saw one leg?

429: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:12

>>428
…He means an old man missing one leg, obviously.

433: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:12

>>424
No, Hasumin’s about to get taken right now.
If she can still go back, she’d better.

435: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 02:13
I can’t walk—can’t even run anymore. The drum-like sound is getting closer.

436: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:13
Must be the old man who lost his leg on these tracks and died here.

444: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 02:16
Hasumi, you’re not among the living anymore.
Your posts don’t read like someone alive.
Accept it, or you’ll never find peace.

445: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:17
Wait for dawn. It’s less scary in daylight.

446: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:17
Should’ve stayed on the train…

452: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 02:20
I’m still alive—I’m bleeding from a fall, and I’m holding the heel that snapped off my shoe.
I don’t want to die.

487: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:32
Yeah, sitting still doesn’t look like it’ll improve anything.

488: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:32
Hasumin, once you’re through the tunnel you should be safe.
Get out the other side, call for help, have them pick you up.

492: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 02:35
I called home. Dad’s ringing the police now, but the boom-boom is getting louder—closer.

496: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 02:36
Before you enter the tunnel, check its name.
Regular tunnels always have a sign.
That way the police will know exactly where you are.

500: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:38
I just hope that sound isn’t a train—might be too late for that, though…

516: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 02:45
I pushed on and reached the tunnel entrance. The sign says “Isanuki.”
The noise is closer now, so I’m going to steel myself and go through.
If Hasumi gets out safely, I’ll post again.

520: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:46
You’ve got this—keep going!

522: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 02:47
This is the last chance. There’s no train, no station, no way back.
What’s chasing you is just echoes of the past your mind conjures.
Dash through the tunnel—if you stall, you’ll be trapped in a nowhere land forever.

562: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 03:10
I’m out of the tunnel! Someone’s standing up ahead.
Glad I followed your advice—thank you.
My face is streaked with tears; Hasumi probably looks like a ghost right now.

566: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:11
Wait, Hasumi! Don’t go!

569: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:12
Stop—seriously, that’s bad news!

570: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:12
Someone standing there at this hour? That’s sketchy…

586: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 03:20
Sorry to make everyone worry. The person was kind—they’ll drive me to the nearest station.
Apparently there’s a business hotel there. Thank you all so much.

588: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:21
Hasumin, one question: where exactly are you?
Could you ask that helpful driver the place name?

590: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:21
Are they really a good Samaritan?
Could be scarier than any ghost.

593: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:23
So, uh… where exactly is this place?

596: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:25
That person’s bad news!
Why hang around the tracks at this hour?
Bet they were dumping a body and bumped into Hasumin.
Run!

606: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 03:29
I asked the driver, and they said we’re in Hina.
That has to be impossible.

607: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:29
Hasumin, get out of the car!

610: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:29
Sorry, Hasumin—where’s “Hina,” exactly?

621: Anonymous Behind You... 04/01/09 03:36
Weird story—
Who’d pick up a girl who came walking from the tracks at this hour?
What was that person even doing?

623: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 03:37
We’re heading deeper into the mountains now.
Doesn’t look like anywhere you could park a car.
The driver’s stopped talking altogether.

627: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:40
Anyone awake at this time is up to no good.

628: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:41
Maybe they stopped talking because you’re glued to your phone?

629: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:41
Hasumin, this is bad—
Did you tell your parents you were “rescued” after the tunnel?

631: Anonymous Behind You... (sage) 04/01/09 03:41
Hasumi-san, please dial 110 again.
This might be your last post.

635: Hasumi ◆KkRQjKFCDs 04/01/09 03:44
My battery’s about to die.
The driver’s acting strange—muttering nonsense. I’m going to bolt the first chance I get.
Just in case, I’ll make this my final post.

After that, Hasumi never posted again.
Whether it was just an elaborate prank, or they really slipped into a place that shouldn’t exist… the truth remains a mystery.

OUTRO

No one knows what became of Hasumi after she stepped onto the platform of “Kisaragi Station.”
The thread snapped off mid-conversation, and her posts never resurfaced.

Was it all an elaborate fiction, or did she truly wander into a place that isn’t part of our world?
The truth is lost in the dark, yet the thread burned itself into countless memories and set the whole country on edge.

Its popularity eventually led to a film adaptation, and the urban legend of “Kisaragi Station” began to spread far beyond the internet—
a modern kaidan that refuses to die.
