The Friend Who Went Missing

It wasn’t a prank, but when I’d just started kindergarten—maybe first grade—there was a filled‑in fishing pond near my house. A friend and I slipped through a gap in the barbed wire to play inside.
The pond had been back‑filled with shirasu*1, and the surface had turned into something like a bottomless bog. The instant my foot sank in, fear hit and I scrambled away, but my friend was already in past his knees, sinking.
I should have called an adult, but terror took over and I ran all the way home.
Later I remember the grown‑ups panicking when they realized my friend was missing.

They never found him; I can still picture a teacher gathering everyone to explain.
Now, as an adult, I can’t understand why no one thought to check that pond.
The area’s been redeveloped, and I’m not even sure where the pond was.
I never heard of anything turning up during the earthworks—maybe he’s still buried there.

Sometimes the memory flashes back and my heart pounds, even though it happened thirty years ago.

*1 Shirasu – A layer of loose volcanic ash common in southern Kyushu; when waterlogged it turns quicksand‑like, making the ground dangerously unstable.

Never seen this copypasta before.

Because it’s not copypasta—it’s my own memory.

If that really happened, reporting it would cause a huge stir—no statute of limitations on something like this.
Mind if I call the cops?

I already feel guilty—please, just let it go.

Imagine what that kid thought, sinking in terror, watching your back as you ran.

Honestly, I wasn’t thinking of abandoning him—I was just desperate to get home.

You’ll be cursed for generations, y’know? Think Ring… Quit posting creepy stuff.

Still, telling it made me feel a little lighter.

Hey, I’m a Japanese net-dweller who read these 2channel threads as they happened. 2channel (2ch) was Japan’s text-only answer to 4chan—massive, chaotic, and anonymous. I translate the legendary horror posts here, adding notes so you can catch the cultural nuances without digging through Japanese logs.
