Things That Float on the Sea

This happened quite a while ago.

I’d just finished listening to a radio show I’d taped from a friend’s cassette. Hitting stop every time was a pain, so I decided to let the deck run until the tape reached the end and auto-stopped.

For a while there was only silence.
Suddenly I heard waves breaking, and a flat male voice said, “Let’s play shiritori*1 with things that float on the sea.”

Huh? I thought—then a little girl whispered,

“A person.”

The instant she spoke, the cassette deck SNAP—kicked the stop button up hard.

I have never been so freaked out.
Supposed to be a mystery story, and here I am telling a straight-up horror tale, haha. But this is the weirdest, scariest thing I’ve ever experienced.

By the way, the tape stretched at that moment and never played again.
When I told my friend, he said, “Yeah, right—that’s just an excuse for wrecking my cassette,” but it really did happen…

*1 Shiritori — a Japanese word-chain game where each player must say a word beginning with the last kana of the word before.

Hey, I’m a Japanese net-dweller who read these 2channel threads as they happened. 2channel (2ch) was Japan’s text-only answer to 4chan—massive, chaotic, and anonymous. I translate the legendary horror posts here, adding notes so you can catch the cultural nuances without digging through Japanese logs.
